PlantGENE Teams and Volunteer Opportunities are open to members and offer a chance to collaborate on various projects and events.

Different projects require various skills, experience, technical knowledge, and time commitment so there is something for everyone!

PlantGENE Teams

Teams are collaborative groups working on short or long-term projects.

Each project can be led by a PlantGENE member volunteer, Project Coordinator Aimee Malzahn, or a Steering Committee Member. The Team will work together to achieve the project goals.

Volunteers can request to join a team by filling out a short form.

The PlantGENE Blog will cover a variety of topics including methods, recent advances in plant sciences, tips and tricks, and resources. Articles can be original writings or summaries. Topics will be generated by team members and community input.

The Outreach Team works together to identify outside organizations for potential collaboration, inform the PlantGENE community of ongoing activity, and facilitate collaborations.

  • Facilitating academia-academia collaborations

  • Exploring potential opportunities for collaboration

A network for postdocs/graduate students/technicians is being developed. Below are some ideas for network activities, but we are open to others.

  • Organize and lead research workshops

  • Learning about careers in industry, academia, non-profit, government, and international organizations

  • Career advice from established researchers

Volunteer to plan events:

A protocol repository is under development. We are looking for protocols that are well-tested, easy to follow, and that include enough detail that other researchers can successfully implement these protocols in their own labs.

In addition to protocol submissions, members can create step-by-step videos to guide researchers through their protocols or volunteer to answer questions from members.

The PlantGENE community has expressed interest in setting up an online forum to facilitate discussions about transformation.

This project is in the early stages of development. A forum presents several logistical challenges, and volunteers are needed to establish the best management practices and write standard operating procedures.

Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteering opportunities are short-term projects or event volunteering.

Volunteers have the option to co-lead projects and events with a Steering Committee member. Organization is supported by the Project Coordinator.

  • Reach out to academia and industry contacts to explore potential opportunities for in-person workshops

Volunteers are needed to organize and speak at workshops and webinars. Workshops are live, 2-hr events with 2 speakers. Webinars are pre-recorded video presentations.
